Setting Styles for Diamond Rings

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

The manner in which a diamond is affixed to a ring is referred to as its setting, and several different setting styles are used for diamond rings. Below we examine some of the major setting styles for diamonds and other precious gemstones in rings:

Channel Setting: In a ring with a channel setting, one or more diamonds are inset into a channel and held in place by a small lip on either edge. Multiple stones in a channel setting are not surrounded by individual prongs, but are situated snugly next to one another within the same recessed channel. Excellent examples of channel settings are those in eternity rings. Eternity rings usually contain a row of diamonds inset in a channel, which stretches either halfway or all the way around the ring. Channel settings may secure all of the stones in a ring such as an eternity ring, or can be situated on either side of one larger center stone with a different setting style, a popular option for engagement rings.

Prong Setting: Also called a “claw setting,” a prong setting consists of a set of usually four or six metal prongs which protrude from the base of a ring and wrap slightly around the top edge of the diamond to hold it in place. Prong settings are popular for rings with one main diamond as the dominant feature, as is the case with most engagement rings. Prong settings are cost effective, and many people prefer them because of the belief that light can pass through a diamond in a prong setting from the bottom as well as the top, contributing to its brilliance.

Bezel setting: In a bezel setting, also referred to as a “rub-over” setting, the diamond is completely encircled by a band of metal which affixes it securely to the ring. A rub-over setting incorporates an elevated collar of metal around the edges of the diamond, which protects and secures the stone better than other elevated setting styles such as the prong setting. A variation of the rub-over setting is a flush setting, in which a diamond is set into an opening and secured at the bottom, with the top of the diamond extending beyond the base.

Tension Setting: A tension setting is a unique diamond setting style in which the metal of the ring itself holds a diamond securely in place within an opening in the metal. The diamond appears to float, since no metal from the ring extends beneath it. You may imagine the metal of the ring acting as a very strong spring which holds the diamond in place. Rings utilizing tension settings must undergo specialized strengthening treatments since the diamond relies on pressure from either side of the opening to hold it in place. A tension setting allows light to enter the diamond from all angles, giving it extra luminosity.

Spiritually Speaking…?

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Wouldn't you rather go to hell? (If it existed)
I mean pretty much everyone is going there.
Every celebrity, every band, every band member of those bands (discluding christian rock), strippers, bartenders, porn stars, everyone! It sounds like it would be the party of the century (or more like eternity) anyone else agree?

How would he know what kind of engagement ring to get??

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

I have been in a relationship for several months and the topic of marriage has come up – a very happy thing. However, I am a little confused about the whole ring thing. When a man proposes, he already has the ring to offer, so why do couples go and pick out just the bands together after they're engaged? I am the one that is going to wear the rock for the rest of eternity, shouldn't I have a say in what it looks like?

Do you like these poems for my grandmother? She may die soon… so i want to make sure these are good. Help!!!?

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Ok, I will show you 6 poems.
Lets go.

Title:Bumps In The Road

There are bumps on the road of eternity.
You can drive over the bumps.
Death is a pothole on the road.
You can drive over that too.
A short stretch of eternity road.
Bumps, then a pothole.
When you reach that pothole,
The car of your life will be shaken and changed.
The car of my life will crash and stall.
And then slowly start up again.
You were my everything.
You shared a part of my heart.
This is just a pothole on a long long road,
And when I reach that pothole,
Our cars will be together again.
Forever.

Title: Seasons

Spring.
Gardening.
Picking flowers.
Playing in the Park.
Wandering around the town.
Creating Everlasting memories of joy and hope.

Summer.
Playing in the sandbox.
Blowing bubbles.
Popping them together.
Making me laugh.
Creating Everlasting memories of joy and hope.

Autumn.
Raking the yard.
Jumping in piles of leaves.
Dancing with Bozo. (her dog)
Creating Everlasting memories of joy and hope.

Winter.
Making a snowman.
Eating the nose.
Throwing snowballs.
Making snow angels.
Creating Everlasting memories of joy and hope.

Seasons pass.
But they stay the same.
Because we are always,
Creating Everlasting memories of joy and hope.

Title: Thank You

For the 14 years I’ve known you,
I never got a chance,
To thank you for all you do.

You bring me up when I’m down,
Showed me the world, all around.
Thank you for doing that for me.

You taught me sports,
And how to ride a bike,
You hugged me when I was scared at night,
Thank you for doing that for me.

There are several other deeds like that you’ve done,
I thank you for all,
But there’s one more thing I need to thank you for,
That’s happened since before I could crawl.

I thank you for loving me,
My entire life through,
I just wanted to say,
I love you too,
and thank you for doing that for me.

Title: The Lever

I want you here,
I need you here,
I just gotta find a way to keep you here.
Life is not eternal,
Nobody lasts forever,
You just stay until God pulls that lever.
Then life just goes away,
But your soul will still be with me,
Right here with me to stay.
I can’t let you go,
Your time isn’t up.
I’ll miss all those times I called,
just to ask what’s up.
I should’ve seen this coming,
I don’t want to face the truth,
that life is not eternal,
and nobody lasts forever,
You just get to stay until God pulls that lever.
And when it’s pulled,
On your final day,
When your time is up,
I’m going to miss all of those times,
When i called to ask what’s up.
Life is not eternal,
Nobody lasts forever,
But God, I’m asking you,
Please don’t pull that lever.

Title: The Bond Is Left UnBroken

Things happen.
People change.
People leave.
But the bond between us is unbroken.
The hills,
in the meadow of life,
were conqured,
without the bond being broken.
It needs no repairs,
A band-aid was never needed.
Death is a mountain in the meadow of life.
But our bond will be left unbroken.

Title: Memories

That day might be coming.
Your sickness is still here.
I look back on the memories,
You have created for me.

Playing with Bozo, (her dog)
Jumping in piles of leaves,
Talking just to talk,
Hating to leave.

Tennis, just for fun,
Playing in the sandbox,
Every day from noon to one,
Sitting out in the sun.

Learning to ride a bike,
Going to the spring festival,
A yearly yardsale, me and you,
A hug whenever your around.

Splashing in the pool,
Tubing down a mountain,
Skiing at Whitetail,
Loving all humanity.

These memories are wonderful,
But there are some I treasure more.
The simplest memories,
The most un-expected ones.

Those silent rainy days,
When we just sat inside,
Talking and laughing,
Those days were my pride.

Those weird, akwward moments,
When we just sat and stared,
And then we’d burst out laughing,
Showing that we cared.

And another of my favorites,
An unsuspected one,
Sitting watching westerns.
Even though we both hated them.

These memories I will treasure,
They will be stored deep in my heart.
Every moment with you,
Created a memory for two.

My fiancee thinks the wedding band I like isn’t big enough?

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

My family owns a jewelry store, and I work there full time. I handle the inventory and see everything that comes through. My fiancee told me to keep an eye out for a wedding band I liked, since we are getting married next year. We’ve already discussed that I probably will just wear my wedding band after we’re married and save my engagement ring for special occasions (my engagement ring is huge for everyday wear, and I’m going to ruin the sapphire center stone wearing it all the time).

So the other day an absolutely beautiful 1920′s platinum and diamond eternity band came in. It’s really petite (and comfortable on my finger), the diamonds are small, but I just love it, it’s perfect. Very pretty, very nice materials (you can’t beat platinum and diamonds), and understated just like I like. My fiancee thinks it’s too small, and says he’d feel bad getting it for me. I don’t know what is going through his head, but in no way have I ever indicated I’d like some monstrosity on my finger for the rest of my life. I think he still thinks because my dad has a jewelry store, that I need big jewels on my finger.

How do i gently explain to him once and for all, I’m happy with pretty and simple? He knows me, I have exactly 5 pieces of jewelry I keep at home and wear regularly, a pair of plain hoops, the diamond studs he got me, a small bangle, my engagement ring and another ring with my grandma’s diamond. That’s it. The rest of my jewelry stays locked in the vault in the jewelry store, I don’t ever wear it. I don’t get where this "it’s too small" stuff is coming from? I mean, he also know this, that I think its so tacky these women with giant engagement rings and giant wedding bands that look so uncomfortable to wear because they’re so wide and thick. I screams "I married him for his money". Not exactly the image I’d like to portray……….
My family adores him and he knows it. In fact my dad and fiancee go out hunting and fishing all the time. My dad is proud that his son in law will be a intelligent responsible man. I can’t be sure (he’d never admit it), but I suspect he for whatever reason is worried I’ll leave him. So I think he likes to get me nice things to "keep me with him". I have never met a person I’d like to be with more than him, we fit together perfectly. And again, it’s a suspicion because i can’t figure out where it’s coming from. When I met him, he wasn’t even in college, dead broke with no job living with his mom. I loved him then, as much as I love him now that he has a college education and a good job. It baffles me.

Buying my husband a new wedding ring…?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

My husband and I eloped about a year ago. I bought him a cheap ring and we discussed originally that when we had an actual ceremony we would buy each other nice rings. We decided recently to forgo the idea of a grand wedding. But for my birthday he bought be a beautiful eternity band. I told him I wanted to buy him a nice ring and he refused. He absolutely loves the one he had because it "means something" and I gave it to him. Well that is nice and all but truthfully his ring looks terrible now. Which is expected since I payed less than 50 for it. So long story short I want to buy him a nice ring for our one year anniversary but I want him to actually wear it. Any suggestions on how to do this tactfully?

Help with wedding bands!!?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

I have a gold 1 carat 3 stone engagement ring (past, present and future) and I am in need of help finding a wedding band that fits this style. I have tryed on plain bands, enhancers, bands with diamonds in them and none of them seem to be what I want. I seen a design of bands in a magazine called an "eternity band." We got my engagment ring at Zales and they didn't have any of these bands in their store. Does anyone know any good websites, not Ebay, that sells these, preferably gold?
